GOOGLE'S NEW TRANSLATION TOOL -A GREAT WAY TO LEARN LANGUAGES

The new Google translator is a boon to those who want a fast translation of any web page or anyone wanting a translation of their written word. Most languages of the world are incorporated for use in this useful tool.If English is the language selected for a passage to be translated, a speech icon appears next to the translation for you to choose listening to it for the correct pronunciation. You can even mouse over it to read the passage it was translate from. A great boon for language teachers and learners, particularly online. Hindi is also a language listed for translations and it is easy for anyone wanting to do a project in Hindi and translate into English or vice versa.The script of translation is fun to watch as it appears simultaneous to your typing,whether it is Chinese , Japanese or Hindi or any of the listed languages.You can even upload any document for speedy translations.

HOW TO SEND HINDI OR KANNADA ASSIGNMENTS TO YOUR TEACHER ONLINE

Homework and essays written in the book used to be submitted for correction by the teacher.It is common knowledge that most assignments today are submitted online.Sometimes the student has to work in his/her group to complete a project.And of course,a deadline has to be met.When the language being used is English,there is no problem.But,when the chosen language happens to be an Indian language such as Kannada/Hindi/Telugu/Malayalam/Tamil,what does the student do?

Many of my students are in a dilemma when such a situation occurs.If you try to"copy and paste" the vernacular language onto a Word document or onto an email client,it does not copy.Many are frustrated by this attempt,because only the pictures selected get copied.

The best solution is to use the Google Indic Transliteration tool to write what you want in the language of your choice,and then,select all,copy and paste into new document on Google Docs,save it and share it with friends.You may invite your friends as collaborators so as to enable them to also edit the document online while on Chat in realtime and submit it to your teacher for approval.You can make your online project/assignment fetch you more marks by simply adding some relevant pictures or even an educational video from youtube or teachertube.Google Docs has these advantages and scores over a Microsoft Word document.

LEARNING LANGUAGES

Choosing the right language to study as a 2nd language in school can be a daunting task.Some students have no qualms about taking up what their parents suggest, still others find it difficult after 2 or 3 years of study,especially in high school when grades begin to dip and the average marks also comes down. A skilled teacher who is native to the language being taught,is essential for every student.
Be it French,Spanish,Kannada,Hindi or additional English, a good syllabus and a good teacher can help immensely with not just the prescribed textbook, but also reading, writing and speaking independently, the language in question, for years to come. After all communication skills are a necessity these days. But, the first step has to be, to have the desire to learn the new language. If the student does not want to learn and is being forced to learn a particular language,he will remain below average in that class.Peers also play a role here. And it remains the duty of the teacher or the tutor to make the classes interesting in additional enticing ways for the student to develop the deep desire to learn the language in question.

LEARN HINDI

Hindi is the national language of India. Hindi is spoken by a vast majority of Indians although there are a number of languages and an even more number of dialects. South India has its own languages that are totally different from hindi, yet most people understand the language since it is taught in schools and colleges. Most are adept at speaking more than one language since they travel outside their home state, have friends and colleagues who are from a different region and hence learn to speak a different language. English is spoken by many in the big cities and tourist spots.
Learning Hindi online is sure easy these days. I have been teaching for many years now and my mother used to teach in a well known Bangalore school for 26 years.
