TOP 10 BRAIN FOODS FOR BETTER ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE

Parents push their children to perform to their utmost during exams, but it is also imperative that they adhere to certain principles themselves.Every child is unique and so is the parent! It goes without saying that a child possesses the genes from his parents and hence his intelligence level may be not far from that of his parents'. But,with hard work and better nutrition and excellent support any student can better his own performance and certainly be the best in school. Environment plays an important part as well. Parents need to understand that a supportive atmosphere at home is essential for optimal academic performance. Creating a quiet study corner or study room and making sure that there are no distractions from visitors, pets or phone calls is every parent's duty. Having a positive atmosphere at home at all times with free air circulation and sufficient lighting makes for a receptive study mind. Study skills are enhanced by listening to soft music at break times, and play activities or pursuing creative hobbies. In addition, prayer and meditation prepares one to concentrate. Parents and teachers are advised never to ever compare their childrens' academic performances or belittle one in front of another, sibling or friend. Negative impacts such as these take their toll in the long run. Recognizing each child's individuality is very essential during their growing years. Allowing 8 hours of sleep at night is most important for any student, exam time or otherwise. The brain needs to develop and function correctly for enhanced academic performance. Eating he right nutritional foods can certainly up students' grades. Providing proper nutrition at mealtimes,in the right proportions, not overeating, and eating peacefully and slowly, helps proper assimilation of nutrients which provide energy and helps develop and strengthen nerve tissues,of which the brain is the biggest organ in the human body. Students are advised to never miss meals especially breakfast. DOES YOUR CHILD REFUSE TO EAT VEGETABLES?

One of my student's mothers recently wanted me to talk to her 12 year old son on eating vegetables. This kind of request comes from most mothers of school going children. Mothers of adolescent children have a different problem-their girls usually refuse to eat altogether as they think they will put on weight.
I will address the issue of the school going child in this post.
Children often are known to bring back what their mothers send in their packed lunch. But, they would have wolfed down their friend's lunch. What they want is variety-variety in taste, flavour, colours and aroma.
They love fried items, and side dishes that include paneer, mushroom, capsicum, etc. There are still others who just do not look at a vegetable dish-they prefer only non vegetarian item for every meal. Most mothers will agree knowingly.
Just how do we get them to eat vegetables and fruits which are so essential in a growing child's diet?
Every child has learnt in science that they must have a balanced diet. They already know about deficiency diseases and how they can be prevented. Every region in the world, and particularly in India, prepares their food differently. For example, brinjal can be cooked as a tasty but oily side dish or it can be batter-fried, roasted and made into a chutney, made as a vangibath and mixed with rice or a pallya made with the addition of another vegetable like the potato which may be more appealing. I have given the example of the brinjal here since most students tell me that they do not like brinjal or eggplant. Almost all students told me they love potato in any form, particularly fries, chips, fingers or batter-fried(bajji/bonda), aloo tikki. So, if we combine brinjal and potato we get them to at least taste the curry. We mothers have to constantly update and find the best recipe to get them to eat. Also knowing what it was in the friend's lunch box that they liked so much will also give us the idea.
Some vegetables can be made into a salad, either raw or cooked in a variety of combinations that are both appealing to the eye and nutritious. Some fruits can be mixed in as well. A healthy diet for a normal, school going child should have at least 5 portions of vegetables and fruits.

AN EGG A DAY

Children love to eat eggs cooked in different forms. Are they nutritious enough for our children? As children my brother and I had to have a half boiled egg and a glass of milk everyday.
Let us consider the nutritive aspect of
eggs since they are easily available, can be stored and can be given to children according to their liking. Some prefer omelette's, others full boiled eggs, still others have to be forced to have as an eggnog (chocolate flavoured). All love cakes, and scrambled eggs.
Eggs are nature's most perfectly balanced food .They contain protein, all vitamins except vitamin C, and minerals.
Eggs have a high nutrient density because they provide significant amounts of vitamins and minerals yet contain only 71 calories.
Eggs are considered a complete protein because they contain all nine essential amino acids, or the building blocks of protein. Our bodies cannot produce these amino acids which are necessary for growth and development.Only food sources can provide us with high quality protein. The white of an egg has more protein than the yolk.Protein quality is expressed as biological value, which measures the rate of efficiency that protein is used for growth. At 93.7%, eggs score higher than any other food.
A large egg contains only a moderate amount of fat, with about 5 grams in only the egg yolk, (1.5 grams saturated), 213 mg of cholesterol and 75 calories. Eggs can easily fit into your daily fat limit.
The white contains more than half the egg's total protein, niacin, riboflavin, chlorine, magnesium, potassium, sodium, and sulfur and all the egg's zinc.
The yolk contains all of the fat in the egg and a little less than half of the protein. It also contains the fat-soluble vitamins A, D, and E. Egg yolks are one of the few foods naturally containing vitamin D. The yolk also provides vitamin B 12 and folic acid, and the minerals iron, calcium, copper and phosphorus.

The National Egg Coordination Committee http://www.e2necc.com/egg-index.html#
is making children and adults aware of the benefits of consuming eggs. Recipes using eggs can be found at http://www.e2necc.com/egg-recipies.html
Eggs are recommended by the National Institute of Nutrition as an important part of a nutritionally balanced diet.

So, make sure your growing child gets his share of eggs everyday in some form or other.
