HOW TO EARN AN EXTRA INCOME BY TUTORING ONLINE

K-12 students constantly need guidance from their teachers. At school, teachers are not able to devote much time to each student, and those that need extra explanations on any topic will not be satisfied. Eventually, such students may lose interest in the particular subject or topic. Teachers want to give their best as it reflects in the students' grades. A teacher needs to note the understanding capacity of every student in her class, and make sure all understand what she/he teaches. Sometimes, a student or students may require additional coaching after school. The class teacher intimates the parents of the student to opt for extra tuitions in order to improve the grades.
Indian parents are overzealous when it comes to their children's performance at school. And even if their children score above average, they want tuitions for their children. Money flows freely for students' academic performance as competition is so great. Getting a good foundation in the school years is necessary.
If you are a teacher with some teaching experience, you can register with an online tutoring agency. There are various websites that cater to children's tutoring needs. A tutor can opt to teach the subject or subjects they are specialized in- Homework Help, Chemistry Homework Help, Physics Homework Help, Organic Chemistry Help, etc. Science and Math tutors are always in demand.  Selected tutors go through a set of procedures they need to be familiar with, while teaching online. Students may opt for regular coaching or once in a while, so there is no dearth of tutoring jobs online. Qualified and experienced tutors come at a premium, so why not make use of your time and talent in earning a few extra dollars. Tutors can opt to be paid via paypal or check or wire transfer. They can also opt for time zones they are comfortable with, and timings that suit them. Some online tutoring solutions also take in research students as tutors. You need to check out a few websites and register with a couple. If you are comfortable, you can opt for a couple more. But, remember that you may need to pay a registration fee, some require you to undergo a test in the subject you want to teach and you may be required to undergo a background check. Some tutoring companies may require a registration fee plus a percentage of your earnings. It would be wise to read the fine print before you register with any of the agencies.

MY EXPERIMENTS AT MENTORING STUDENTS

Students prepare for their exams in different ways. Some need a tutor to help them get through to the next class and some are good on their own, but it is today's competition that scares every parent into hiring the best of tutors. Even if a student is getting 75% or more, the parent thinks that with tuitions, their precious should get 100%. All my students study in excellent schools and do very well on their own. But, what they really need is more of a mentor than a tutor. Guidance in study skills, blending of traditional with modern methods of study, and most importantly, they need someone to listen. Influence of a quality tutor is very important at this stage, for students unconsciously imbibe varied methods of study habits in addition to values.
Over the years, I have understood that every student has a different style of studying according to the school they go to. This is because the teachers of the particular school adopt a particular method of teaching for their students and moulding them. For example, the writing style of students in India is mainly cursive, whereas my NRI students had the print style(separate letters). American students hold their pens differently. A couple of students that were enrolled in the so called international schools did not have a legible handwriting, nor did they have spelling skills, simply because they had been taught to use the computer keyboard to type a YES or NO for their multiple choice questions throughout primary and middle school. When it was time to take exams from the 7th standard onwards, they are not equipped with correct spelling or handwriting. Furthermore, they developed cold feet. Parents are always kept in the dark regarding their academics, as books remain in school and they are discouraged from teaching their children at home.Such schools emphasize on sports rather than academics. There should be a healthy balance between the two for overall development of mind and body.
The traditional method of "learning by rote" works best for the average student, whereas a student who is made to understand the basic concepts of subjects like science and maths will really apply his mind in answering any type of question pertaining to that topic. In short, the student develops self confidence and is also able to teach his classmates. Modern methods utilized are the powerpoint presentations, and animated software used in some schools.Teachers are still new to the idea that they have to keep abreast of technology and use it in the classroom to be highly effective.
While teaching languages,English,Hindi and Kannada, I find that students pick up much faster if they are made to pronounce correctly as they write. All three faculties of hearing, seeing and speaking are being used effectively to learn a new language. Watching animated stories in the particular language also helps vocabulary building.Teaching sciences, mathematics, geography and several other subject topics can be much more interesting when students are allowed to watch animated videos of the said subject and the particular topic. With this in mind, and the need for our students to understand and perform better at their grades, I have been researching the internet for free educational videos and collecting them for students at
Visual Learning. Glad to say that my students find them very useful and their learning time is cut in half. This site also offers them a key to several useful websites for homeworkhelp.Several free education sites are also reviewed for use.
Listening is extremely important as a tutor/mentor.Some students express certain things about school or their friends which can be tactfully utilized in instilling good values toward family and society. Sometimes it is imperative to let the parents know.
Parents also most often take a tutor into confidence as their children sometimes do not tell them everything, or they know a teacher's words has a greater effect in making their child eat his veggies or drink milk or simply sit and study after the tutoring session.

FIND A TUTOR OR A TUTORIAL

Schoolbags are packed to the limit as students begin their classes for the new academic year. Knowing which subjects they need more help with, according to their previous report card, their parents set about the business of finding a good tutor for the particular subject. Some parents want an overall better performance in the next exams and so, require a tutor who teaches all subjects. Evening time is adjusted to fit in tennis, swimming, basketball, music, karate and of course, tuitions. Parents are generally a busy lot these days and want the best for their children-money no bar. Some students even have two tuitions, for different subjects.

Tutorials cost much less compared to a home tutor that teaches one on one.
Online tutors are the latest breed and most are attached to some agency. Some, of course, are happy freelancing both offline and online, like myself.
Even these tutor sessions have come of age. They are no longer boring. PowerPoint presentations are used, educational videos shown, online vocabulary lists and math problems are generated according to academic level. Multimedia presentations to show various processes are a big hit with the students.
So,choose your tutor with care! A quality tutor who helps your child in organizing his time, books and himself in addition to developing a study pattern is well worth it.

VIRTUAL WHITEBOARD

A tutor can utilize online white boards to teach his students. In real time, a student can grasp the concepts of Algebra or Languages, or any Art just by logging on to a common virtual white board. This can be embedded in a website or blog as I am doing now. It has a variety of uses including playing games.
Feel free to try it out.

BELIEVE IN YOUR CHILD'S POTENTIAL

Every child is unique!
There can be many reasons why a child does not perform well in academics. Whatever the reason, parents hunt for a tutor. Many a time, parents expect tutors to perform miracles with their wards just before exams. Understandably, the parents have either no time to spare or the children do not listen to their parents. It is common to note that a student disagrees with his parent on a lesson or on the teaching methodology. For this reason, some schools recommend that a parent should refrain from teaching at home. But when the parents are summoned to the school for a report of the child, the parents panic when told that their child is not doing as well as his classmates. Some schools insist on the learning by play method and no exams upto 6th grade. Books are not sent home either and the parents are clueless about the child's performance. Some children get cold feet at the mere mention of exams when they suddenly have to write one in 7th grade. Some do not know how to manage their time in an exam and invariably leave out a section of the question paper. Some students are able to score well in the tests where few portions are given, but when a whole term's portion is given for the exam, they do not perform as well.
A tutor can certainly help his student with time management, better organisational skills, development of a positive attitude which reinforces the student's self confidence. Engaging the best tutor one can find, is only half the battle won.
But what of the student? Does he really excel in academics after a new tutor begins?
In my experience as a tutor of many years, it is always seen that the attitude of the student is the biggest factor in determining his progress. "You can only take a horse to the water but cannot make it drink " is a common saying which is very apt in this case. Students who desired to do well, put in their best and eventually did extremely well with the help of tutors. But those that were not motivated enough, did as before or sometimes, even more badly. So, what attitudes should a learner have, or how can we help change attitudes?
The answer lies in the fact that the attitudes of the student is closely related to the parent's belief systems. The parents of those that did well did not give up on them. Encouraging words and unconditional love was like magic potion to them. Parents believed in their child's potential. Harsh words were never used to make them feel small. They were never reprimanded in front of their friends in comparison to their friend's children who performed very well. They were not belittled in front of a sibling who did better. All this can be damaging and the child will stop trying after some time. A tutor cannot perform magic if the parent keeps belittling the child."You can do it!" ,"Good!","Excellent!" is what a child wants to hear while learning. Bill Cosby, who brings out the best in children on his talk shows seconds that. I sincerely hope you encourage your child today and everyday. It will help build his confidence.

FINDING A QUALITY HOME TUTOR

Having been a private tutor for several years now, my interactions with parents, grandparents, students, principals and teachers from a wide variety of schools has given me an insight into several aspects of home tutoring. In this post, I will discuss the qualities necessary in a good tutor for your child.

Most parents just want to find a tutor to be able to tell everyone that they have hired a private tutor. Some parents are too busy to even see if their children have done their homework.Still others feel the genuine need to engage a tutor for the child to pick up his grades in a particular subject/subjects. Some parents want the child to get a good foundation in understanding the basic concepts because in higher classes, competition gets stiff and they have to stay ahead.
Whatever the need, quality tutors are hard to come by.

  • A quality home tutor must be one that can establish rapport with the student. Being able to speak and connect in the same language makes all the difference. Once the tutor and student connect, effective communication and impartation of useful knowledge occurs. The tutor will be more effective when he knows when to draw the line, especially with a particularly playful or talkative student.
  • A tutor should also be an excellent motivator. Sometimes, the child is afraid of exams. He does well in his weekly/monthly tests but he panics at the mere mention of exam. Encouraging him and showing him how to improve his scores, will greatly help.
  • Watching his friends perform well sometimes can act as motivation but in some students, it brings in tremendous pressure and he begins to give up on himself. He might just switch his mind off in the classroom or the tuition session. It is here the tutor also becomes a strong motivating force. He has to help maintain a positive healthy mindset which is crucial for achild's performance in school.
  • Healthy habits and great values of life are unconsciously imbibed by the student. Therefore, the tutor must be able to do this.
  • Teaching should be his passion, and should be able to guide each student according to his area of difficulty.
  • He should speak regularly to the parents regarding the child's progress and get regular feedback from the school as well. With this, the tutor can be certain of his teaching style and pace.

It is not whether the tutor is a regular teacher in a school or that he is a Ph d , it is the way in which he makes the child interested in the subject and has the desire to help him in improving his grades. This is the quality factor in a tutor.
