ARE YOU YOUR KID'S FRIEND OR KID'S PARENT?

It is often seen when children are accompanying their parents to a mall or any restaurant, it is the child that decides what the family should do or eat. Similarly, what car a family should buy, and what cereal to have for breakfast! Clearly, parents are giving in to their children's demands, to have some peace.

The reasons for this are many.
  • Both parents are busy working or engaged with commitments and children are most often left to themselves.
  • Television and print advertisements are always aimed at the children in the home, clearly indicating who's BOSS!
  • Parents are not making the effort to keep their children in check and are allowing themselves to be manipulated.
  • Some parents even gloat over their kids manipulating them. They fail to see the distant future and what they will grow up to be!
  • " Keeping up with the Jone s's" is what drives some parents into believing and accepting the child's point of view.

To all such parents, I say, "Make your choice today! Do you want to be your kid's friend or your kid's parent?"
Always remember God made us parents for our kids.

MUSIC FOR THE STUDENT

My nephew goes to a music class for 45 minutes every week with his father in Finland. Nothing new, you might say. But he is only 7 months old! And the room will be full of babies and parents, I was told. The music teacher plays the piano and sings a few rhymes and these babies either look at each other or make up their own songs babbling away.
Indian schools have an hour per week at least for music lesson. Western or Indian classical, being their choice. After school, a few students enroll for music and dance lessons. Some girls join the veena or flute, boys go for harmonium or tabla if it is Indian. Some opt for Classical singing.
Listening to and making music, especially classical, makes a student peaceful and refreshed. He quickly grasps his studies, and has a positive approach to life itself.
On the other hand, researchers say that one who listens to heavy metal, rock, hip hop,are restless when they have to study. Arrogance is part of their personality. Pop and jazz are more mild in comparison.
Classical singing according to one singer of repute, utilizes breathing rhythms which aid in one having good health and radiating a youthful and happy personality.

I AM AN INDIAN

Students in India are often influenced by the west. Jeans and t-shirt, KFC and Macdonald's all form part of this great influence. Many in their 20's and 30's also ape the west putting on an accent as well. Most of these are working in the BPO sector.
But, did you know that the west is also influenced by India and Indians? Yoga and spirituality, Indian curries, our Taj Mahal and of late our teachers who teach online are indispensable. Indians are a respected community anywhere in the world. They are known for their family values, culture, integrity. Many Indians today are the CEO's of large companies both in India and abroad. Indian women too occupy many top positions. Indian women also are the most beautiful as they have won many international beauty pageants.
This slideshow underlines the contribution of Indians in the world today.

SHOULD I GET A PET DOG FOR MY CHILDREN?

My friend was having a very tough time with her kids. Their demand -a puppy!
She was trying very hard to convince them of all things negative with regard to keeping pets, but to no avail. Oh, and they wanted a great dane pup! The elder boy, all of 12 years, got a list of all breeders in their city from friends and the internet and put up a big fight every evening after school. He called up his grandparents and friends for support in his cause. His younger brother, just 8 years nodded in agreement. Sounds familiar?

Children love animals particularly, dogs. And, at some point will want a pet at home during their growing years. And they promise to do everything in looking after it. The benefits of keeping a pet dog can be tremendous. Children learn to be more responsible, caring, loving, fit and healthy. So, if you have space, and can afford it, go for it! Watch your children enjoy playing and you will certainly see the difference in their attitudes towards all living beings.

DO PEOPLE LIVE IN ANTARCTICA?

Antarctica is the fifth largest continent on earth.
It is always covered in ice.
Except penguins and perhaps seals, no other form of life exists.
Asking several of my students about whether the continent of Antarctica was inhabited, I had to infer from their answers that their knowledge was limited to the common general knowledge questions.
So,does any one live there?

A number of governments maintain permanent research stations throughout Antarctica. Many of the stations are staffed around the year. A total of 30 countries (as of October 2006), all signatory to the Antarctic Treaty, operate seasonal (summer) and year-round research stations on the continent and in its surrounding oceans. The population of persons doing and supporting science on the continent and its nearby islands varies from approximately 4,000 persons during the summer season to 1,000 persons during winter. In addition to these permanent stations, approximately 30 field camps are established each austral summer to support specific projects.

The largest of the research stations is the McMurdo station of the US. India has its presence in Antarctica as a permanent camp at Maitri Station which was established in 1989. Another Indian station called Dakshin Gangotri which functioned between 1984 and 1991 has been abandoned.

Life on an Antarctic station among several research scientists and support staff can be extremely varied and in recent years women number almost half that of men. They are also seen increasingly taking up important roles as base commander and leadership of scientific teams. There are various forms of entertainment and clubs to hang out with friends.

Seven Secrets to Giving the Impromptu Speech

The following are seven secrets to preparing an outstanding presentation when you have less than thirty minutes:
  1. You Don't Need the Perfect Presentation
Get started! Don't freeze expecting perfection. When you think you need to be perfect, this can lead to paralysis. Management realizes, because of the short time period, that you will not be perfect. The key is to work quickly, not frantically.
  1. Start With an End in Mind
Ask yourself, "What do I want to accomplish with my presentation?" Do you want to persuade, entertain, or move the audience to action? Once you have these answers, work to develop your presentation to achieve these goals.
  1. It's About the Audience
    Ask the following questions:

    • "Who is my audience?
    • "What does the audience want?"
    • "What does the audience want to gain from the speech?"
    • "What is the level of expertise of the audience members?"

Once you have the answers to these questions, you can tailor your speech to meet the audience's needs.
  1. Keep It Simple
Don't be overwhelmed with information overhaul. Keep your presentation clear and concise by focusing on three main points. This will save you time when collecting your backup information.
  1. Make an Outline
Create an outline of your speech. Depending on your own individual thought process, you may want to mind map, a freestyle way of putting ideas together, or outline. Outline your beginning, body with three points, and ending.
  1. Start and End Strong
Concentrate on knowing the beginning and ending of your presentation. Feel confident in giving the beginning of your presentation, and you will become more comfortable giving the rest of your speech. End on a strong note because your speech ending will be the last thing your audience will remember about your presentation.
Your Presentation Starts in the Mind
Find five minutes before your presentation; go to a quiet place, if possible; and meditate. Think about the positive results of your presentation. Visualize your giving an outstanding presentation and how well the audience is receiving your speech. Also find a mirror; hopefully, in a private area; and look into the mirror and say any of the followin
g affirmations:

  • "This presentation is a great opportunity for me."
  • "Every opportunity to speak is an opportunity for success."
  • "I am a great speaker."
  • "The audience will enjoy my presentation."
  • "I have something of valuable to share with the audience."
  • "I appreciate this opportunity to make a presentation."

Note: Your affirmations become more powerful when you keep them short and keep them in the present state (Future state example: I will become a better speaker.).

Now that you have read these secrets, you have twenty-five minutes left. Remember, the speech will not break your career. However, being able to rise to the occasion and give an outstanding presentation can enhance your career, business, and life opportunities. Apply these seven secrets and you, too, will give an outstanding presentation in less than thirty minutes.
